My name is Joe Sage, Principal of Robert Boeckman Middle School (BMS). I am beyond excited to join this incredible group of learners and staff. I believe that all students can learn and that in order to increase learner success, we need to provide a high quality education in the classroom and foster leadership between our school and community. 

Middle school is a critically important time for our students on their educational journey. At BMS, we are committed to personalization that nurtures curiosity and innovation. We strive to ensure that each learner exercises agency for continuous growth in order to find joy and well-being for their future while positively impacting their community.  

Prior to joining Farmington Area Public Schools, I served as a dean of students, assistant principal and principal for Faribault Public Schools. I started my career in education as an earth science and physics teacher and have also served as a digital learning coach. My academic background includes a Specialist in Educational Leadership from Minnesota State University Moorhead, a Masters in Educational Leadership from St. Mary's University and a Bachelor of Science in Physics/General Science from St. Cloud State University

While away from work, I enjoy spending time with my wife and two kids. We enjoy going up north and spending as much time as we can outside.

My name is Dan Thompson, Assistant Principal at Boeckman Middle School I started in education at Eastern Carver County Schools as a middle school language arts, science, and social studies teacher for the first 10 years of my career.  I then transitioned to a role as an Intervention and Equity Specialist for four years, where I worked to develop structures to support all learners and engage families that historically had been disenfranchised by public education.  During my time as a classroom teacher, I also coached football, boys’ & girls’ basketball, and golf. 

Originally, I am from Missoula, Montana.  I obtained an Elementary Education degree and middle school endorsement in Social Studies from Concordia College, in Moorhead.  I earned my Masters in Education from Saint Mary’s University and my Education Specialist degree from Minnesota State, Mankato.  I am passionate about personalizing learning through redesigning systems to meet the needs of all learners.  I look forward to meeting you and engaging with you to build a strong learning community at Boeckman.  

Outside of work, my wife and two young boys love to golf, play cards, and explore the outdoors.

Attendance and Administrative Guidelines

Farmington School District 192 and Boeckman Middle school are obligated to follow the Minnesota Law on School Attendance until age 18.  The Farmington Board of Education and administration believe that it is the student’s right and responsibility to be present in school.

Boeckman Middle School encourages daily and regular student attendance.  The school recognizes that school attendance is a shared responsibility by the student, parent, and school.  Students who attend school are best prepared to perform successfully academically and socially. Research shows that academic performance and student engagement in school is directly related to college performance and later success in life. 

BMS supports all components within the District Student Attendance Policies and Regulations.

Contacting the School

If a student will be absent, a parent/guardian must contact Boeckman Middle School by 9:45 AM each day of the absence.  You may do either of the following options to contact the school:

  • Call the attendance line at 651-460-1405

We ask that parents/guardians provide the reason for the absence. The school determines if the absence falls within the excused or unexcused parameters. If the school does not receive communication from the parent/guardian, the student’s absence is automatically unexcused.

Administrative Guidelines

History of Robert Boeckman Middle School

Boeckman Middle School is named for Robert Boeckman, the longtime superintendent of Farmington Area Public Schools. Boeckman oversaw the construction of the facility - originally Farmington High School - in the early 1970s.

The school became a middle school in 2009 and now serves students in grades 6-8.

Dedication Ceremony

 

The school was dedicated in Mr. Boeckman's honor on Sept. 22, 2009. Many community members, staff were on hand, as were Mr. Boeckman's family and friends.

Robert Boeckman began his career in education in 1952 as an elementary and secondary school teacher and baseball and basketball coach in Phelps, Wis. In 1955, he accepted a job as principal in Goodridge, Minn. From 1959 to 1964, he served as a principal in the Eden Valley School District and later served as superintendent in Eden Valley from 1964 to 1966. Boeckman served as superintendent in the Arlington-Green Isle school district from 1966 to 1969 before coming to Farmington in 1969.

Under the leadership of Superintendent Boeckman, a referendum was passed and the original structure of Farmington Senior High School was built at 800 Denmark Avenue. This high school, now Robert Boeckman Middle School, opened its doors to students in the fall of 1974.

As the district continued to grow during his tenure, Superintendent Boeckman led the purchase of the land for the district’s second elementary school, passed a referendum for the same, and oversaw the construction of Akin Road Elementary School. During Superintendent Boeckman’s tenure, the district nearly doubled in the number of students it served and the teachers it employed. Superintendent Boeckman left his mark in all areas of the educational community. He retired from Farmington on June 30, 1989.
