The Boeckman Buzz
January 9th - January 13th
A Note from Principal Sage
BMS Families,
Happy New Year to all of our BMS families! I want to start off by thanking everyone for being flexible last week as mother nature decided it was time for more snow! Thank you for your partnership as we navigated through a snow day and Flex Learning day.
Last week, I had the privilege of serving our learners lunch. It was undoubtedly one of the highlights of my week. At BMS, our core values are integrity, responsibility and compassion. This was on full display as I interacted with so many of our BMS learners. The smiles, laughs and number of times I heard, "thank you" was spectacular. We have incredible kids at BMS and I feel extremely lucky to get to spend time with them each week!
As we kick off the new year, we also will dive into a new 7 Mindsets theme. The theme this month is "Live to Give." In transitions classes learners will learn about and reflect on the four critical components of:
- Embrace Every Moment
- Get in the Zone
- Let Yourself be Vulnerable
- Act with Purpose
The Time Is Now Mindset teaches us the importance of harnessing the power of the moment and taking purposeful action. The simple fact is that all of our power to act and make an impact exists in this moment. We cannot change the past, and the future hasn’t happened, so we must recognize that our only path to happiness, fulfillment and meaning is to take purposeful action in the present toward creating the lives of our dreams.
On January 12th and January 17th we will have choir performances at FHS at 6:00 and 8:00 pm. We are looking forward to two wonderful performances!
Have a great week!
-Joe Sage, Principal

WINTER NWEA MAP Test - January 9-February 10, 2023
Beginning January 9, some learners may be asked to participate in the NWEA MAP test. The NWEA MAP tests are adaptive computer delivered assessments that are administered to more than 11 million students across the country, which provides a large National Norm sample for comparison. Farmington Schools chooses to administer tests in reading and math to students in grades 2 through 8. The adaptive nature of the tests means that the test adjusts to the student's responses. As a student answers correctly, the test gets more challenging. As they get items wrong, the test presents easier items. The purpose of the assessment is to identify the student's academic level in the specific content area, regardless of age, grade level or prior achievement.
To read more about the NWEA MAP test, please visit the school website, linked here. There is a link to the Opt Out information for both the NWEA MAP tests on the left side of the webpage. Please complete the form and return it to the front office. *Please note that if you Opted out in the fall, you do not need to resubmit the opt out form for the remainder of the year.
A message from our Health Office
Respiratory illness, including Influenza (flu), Covid-19 and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), have increased significantly in Minnesota in the past several weeks.
Flu and RSV spread each year in Minnesota during the late fall and winter months. This year, we have an early season with a lot of spread, impacting pediatric capacity at hospitals, primary care clinics, and emergency rooms throughout Minnesota.
Symptoms
- Symptoms of Flu and RSV include: a runny nose, sneezing, chills, fatigue, fever, muscle aches, sore throat, headache, and cough.
- nfluenza is not “stomach flu”, a term used by some to describe illnesses causing vomiting or diarrhea.
- Symptoms in many children and adults are generally mild.
- Flu can be severe in children less than 5 years, particularly those under 2 years and those with underlying health conditions.
- RSV can be severe especially in young infants and children with underlying heath conditions.
To limit the spread of Flu, RSV, and other viral respiratory diseases:
- Get the flu vaccine. Make sure Covid -19 boosters are up to date.
- Keep children home from school when they are sick with a fever of 100 degrees or higher-without fever reducing medication.
- Keep children home if they are unable to participate in regular activities.
- Encourage students to cover their nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing.
- Encourage students to wash hands thoroughly with soap and water frequently, especially after coughing/sneezing.
- If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizers.
- Clean and disinfect commonly touched surfaces (e.g., doorknobs) daily, or every 6 hours if children are sick.
- Do not allow sharing of anything that goes into the mouth (e.g., water bottles).
- Clean and sanitize toys, objects, and surfaces daily, and more often if children are sick.
- Masks can be worn to prevent the spread of illness.
Return to school
- Students with flu can or RSV can return to school when they have been fever-free for 24 hours (without use of fever reducing medication) when they feel well enough to participate in routine activities.
- Students who test positive for Covid-19 can return to school 5 days after the onset of symptoms if they are fever free and able to participate in routine activities. Mask use is encouraged for 5 days upon return to school.
- Students should be able to eat and drink normally, have no respiratory difficulty, be alert and active and not have large amounts of secretions before return to school.
Thanks so much and stay healthy!
