The Boeckman Buzz
September 19th - September 23rd
A Note from Principal Sage
BMS Families,
We had an exceptional week at BMS. On Thursday, we practiced our Run-Hide-Fight protocol. Our school engaged in a common presentation and provided opportunity to ask questions, seek clarification and become more familiar with the school campus. We were proud of our learners as we went through this training.
This week, we will welcome a special visitor to BMS. Please see below in the newsletter to learn more about NASA astronaut, Mark Vande Hei.
We will continue to highlight our new staff in the upcoming weeks. We will also highlight a school counselor so we can get to know them better!
Please note that Thursday, September 20th, is our official picture retake day.
We value and appreciate the partnership with our families. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to reach out. We are here to help!

Get to Know our Counselors - Mrs. Jennings!
Mrs. Jennings –
7th Grade Counselor
8th Grade: Challenger House, A – L Counselor
I am looking forward to working with learners and families at BMS throughout the year! This will be my 7th year as a school counselor, and I am passionate about working with students and families. I believe through education, support, and guidance all learners can be successful when they are given the right tools and opportunities to learn and grow as individuals.
Middle school is an exciting time to explore learner’s interests, skills, and abilities to find a future they are excited about pursuing! As a counselor, I work to support learners and families with academic support, career, and college readiness planning, and social/emotional development through individual and group counseling, and classroom developmental guidance lessons.
I am excited to work collaboratively with learners, staff, and families at BMS! Please let me know how I can assist you throughout your middle school years.
You may contact me at tjennings@farmington.k12.mn.us or 651.460.1413.
New Staff Spotlight - Emmi Pitzen
Hometown: Brownton, Minnesota
Job prior to coming to BMS: This will be my first year of teaching! I recently completed student teaching at Boeckman Middle School and Akin Road Elementary School.
What Colleges/Universities did you attend: Southwest Minnesota State University
Who is the best teacher you’ve ever had and why were they the best: In high school I had two of the most amazing English teachers, Mr. Hiltner and Mrs. Collins. They were both very influential on my decision to become a teacher myself. In every lesson that they taught, they showed their passion and love, not only for the subject, but also for the students. They offered endless support in academics and personal endeavors, and always showed they cared.
What are you reading now (or read recently): I am currently reading the novel “Where the Crawdads Sing” by Delia Owens, as well as “No Safety In Numbers” by Dayna Lorentz.
What is the furthest you have ever been from home: A few summers ago I went and spent a month in Europe, touring France, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, and Monaco. That was the furthest, and the longest, I had been away from home!
What interests you outside of the school: I adore hiking and traveling, especially with my husband, Dylan. It is a goal of ours to visit all the National Parks in our lifetime! I also love to read, try new recipes, and enjoy the simple things in life like lake days, art festivals, and farmer’s markets. I would also consider myself an avid crafter and enjoy designing jewelry and clothing, as well as painting.
What is one big goal you have for this school year: One goal that I have for myself this school year is to take in as many learning opportunities as I can. Your first year of teaching is full of highs and lows, each one an opportunity for reflection!
FALL NWEA MAP Test – September 19 to October 14
Beginning September 19, students will be asked to participate in the NWEA MAP test. The NWEA MAP tests are adaptive computer delivered assessments that are administered to more than 11 million students across the country, which provides a large National Norm sample for comparison. Farmington Schools chooses to administer tests in reading and math to students in grades 2 through 8. The adaptive nature of the tests means that the test adjusts to the student's responses. As a student answers correctly, the test gets more challenging. As they get items wrong, the test presents easier items. The purpose of the assessment is to identify the student's academic level in the specific content area, regardless of age, grade level or prior achievement.
To read more about the NWEA test, please visit the school website, linked here. There is a link to the Opt Out information for both the NWEA tests on the left side of the webpage. You may use the 21-22 school year form if needed. Please return all forms to the front office.
NASA Astronaut - Mark Vande Hei
NASA astronaut Mark Vande Hei is scheduled to present at Farmington High School and Boeckman Middle School this coming week.
Mark’s mother, Mary Vande Hei, has been a substitute teacher in our district. Through Mary, we were able to send a Farmington Tigers pin to the space station, and this pin is now on display at Boeckman Middle School along with other memorabilia from Mark’s time in space.
Mark Vande Hei was selected by NASA in 2009. He was born in Virginia and later moved to Minnesota, graduating fromBenilde-Saint Margaret’s High School in Saint Louis Park. Vande Hei earned a Bachelor of Science in Physics from Saint John's University.
Vande Hei’s first spaceflight experience was serving as the flight engineer on the International Space Station from September through February of 2018. More recently, Vande Hei served as flight engineer 2 for Expedition 65/66 from April 2021 to Mark 2022. After 355 days in space, he set the US record for longest continuous spaceflight. While on board the International Space Station, he worked to maintain the Station and further its science objectives along with the crews of three Dragon spacecraft and five Soyuz spacecraft.
Student Surveys
SD 192 may utilize surveys to gather student opinions and information about students, as outlined in Policy 520. The purpose of this policy is to establish the parameters of information that may be sought in student surveys.
For the 2022-2023 school year, ISD 192 anticipates student surveys to be administered as follows:
- Social Emotional Learning surveys for grades 3-5 will take place in November 2022 and again in May 2023.
- Social Emotional Learning and Equity & Inclusion surveys for grades 6-12 will take place in November 2022 and again in May 2023.
- Curiosity, Creativity and Critical Thinking Survey will take place in January/February 2023.
- Safe Routes to School Survey (Boeckman Middle School only) will take place in October 2022.
Once the specific survey dates have been determined and the survey design process is complete, parents/guardians will be given direct, timely notice when their students are scheduled to participate in a student survey, the opportunity to review the survey and to opt their students out of participating in the survey.
Questions may be directed to the building principal.
